Cesária Évora song lyrics
Cesária Évora was born in August 27, 1941, in the port town of Mindelo on the Cape Verde island of Săo Vicente. Known as the "barefoot diva" because of her appearances on stage in her bare feet for supporting the homeless and poor women and children from her country, Cesária Évora won in 2004 the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album.
She is the queen of the morna, a soulful genre that descends from the Portuguese fado, mixing her sentimental folk tunes with the acoustic sounds of guitar, cavaquinho, violin, accordion, and clarinet. Many of her songs speak about the Cape Verde's long and bitter history of isolation and slave trade and about emigration, two-thirds of the million Cape Verdeans living abroad.
