Cartola song lyrics

Cartola

Cartola was a Brazilian musician, born in Rio de Janeiro, on October 11, 1908. He was named like that because of his "coco hat" that he worn as a construction worker. Known as the founder of the Mangueira Samba School, one of the most famous Rio samba schools, Cartola was also the owner of a nightclub devoted to samba called Zicartola, a place where forgotten sambistas were brought back to sing and new ones were introduced to the public.

Cartola released his first album in 1974, but he couldn’t enjoy a real success due to prejudice against "samba people" and especially against black "samba people". He gained some popularity, but never financial achievements, so he had to work to earn his living. A journalist found Cartola washing cars in Ipanema in the mid 60s and started helping him to become more popular.
