Jorge Ben Jor

Jorge Ben Jor (sometimes written Benjor) is a Brazilian popular musician. He was born in Rio de Janeiro on March 22, 1942. He is well known for the mix of samba, funk and rock, creating a samba-rock with lyrics that blend humor and satire.

Jorge Ben Jor’s career started with his performances at parties and nightclubs, where he played with the guitar his mother gave him. In 1963, when singing to a small audience "Mas que Nada" (that became his first big hit in Brazil), an executive from the recording company Philips listened and helped him to release his first disc one week later. Along his career, Jorge was initially influenced by João Gilberto and later by the cultural and musical Tropicália movement.

His own hit single "Taj Mahal" (legally recognized in a plagiarism lawsuit) and the 2006 remake of Ben Jor's "Mas Que Nada" are also big successes for Jorge.
