Ary Barroso

Ary Barroso was a Brazilian composer and the greatest name of the samba-exaltação (samba written with the intentions of praising or showing enthusiasm). He was born in Ubá, Minas Gerais on November 7, 1903 and at the age of seven barroso became an orphan. Raised by his aunts and grannies who wanted to make him a classical pianist or a priest, Ary Barroso moved to Rio de Janeiro to study Law.

He began his career playing the piano in movie theaters and cabarets and after his debute on the radio in 1933, he hosted successful shows. He wrote in 1939 "Aquarela do Brasil", a song that became the alternative Brazilian anthem. Elected town councilor in 1946, Ary Barroso fought for copyright laws. He died in Rio de Janeiro on February 9, 1964 because of liver cirrhosis. In his memory, in 1995, there were released 3 CDs with over 50 artists performing his compositions and a songbook.
